The Tunnels Of Bletchley Park
Once a month a group of geeks and tech lovers meet up at Bletchley Park to network, chat, and talk about how best to raise awareness for Bletchley Park's campaign for survival.
This meeting is called Station X (@StationX) after the 10th Mi6 radio station that was situated at the Park.
During the last meeting, Station X regular and Bletchley Park volunteer Adam (@Computid) mentioned that he found the entrance of a tunnel in one of the buildings whilst moving some equipment.
Mention tunnels at a Station X get together and you are certain to prick my curiosity. There are legends a-plenty about passageways under the park leading to and from the station and pub.. But that's just what they are Legends. Survey teams have been brought in to find proof of the interconnecting tunnels and chambers that were meant to bring the workers in secretly and allow Churchill safe passage to the pub.
No one has found them.
That doesn't mean they are not there though.
A small group of us followed Adam to where he found the opening and lo and behold there in the floor, covered by wood and partly concealed with a concrete beam was a hole with a rusty ladder leading down.
So I went down..
Dark dank and full of cobwebs, It was obvious that no one had been down in a while. I borrowed Gordon's (@gt_p) camera and took a few photos. There was a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Perhaps I should draw a parallel to Bletchley Park's use of social media and the hope that all will come good in the end.
On this occasion the light signified that this may well be an innocent service tunnel linking departments in a now run down and disused building. Not as we had hoped, a shortcut to the pub.
The mystery continues and the hunt still goes on.
